SERIES SUMMARY

Creatura The Creatura Series Book 1 eBook Nely Cab

I'm split right down the middle here. On the one hand, I loved Creatura and I desperately want to read the rest of the series. On the other hand, I have huge issues with the veiled abuse that is a common thread in new adult paranormal romances. We saw it in Twilight too. We have these ancient, should-be mythological men stuck in the bodies of teenage boys falling in love with innocent teenage girls and falling so hard and fast that they become controlling and abusive. However, the abuse is veiled and celebrated as being romantic.

Yes, it's fiction. However. The young ladies reading these books are real. They are generally a little younger than myself and are navigating the dating scene and are often naive and new at it. Believe it or not, these things seep into our subconscious and shape how we view relationships. I don't want my daughters or my friend's daughter-who I know reads these-to get into their heads that love=control and jealousy. At one point in Creatura David grabs her arm roughly and hurts her just because another boy is looking at her. That's not her fault. Why is she being punished for the desires of another? That's not sexy. That's not romance. That's abuse and it's never okay and never excusable. Ever.

That being said, I sincerely hope that the rest of the series redeems itself because other than those things (which are big things) it's really fantastic. I was so impressed with Isis in the beginning and so certain that she was going to be a refreshingly strong female lead as she didn't swoon at David's feet and rejected his advances at first. I admired that so much! That's not something we see often enough in these books. Another part of their relationship that I did enjoy was that David intentionally distanced himself in some ways and refused to be in any compromising situations with Isis and was willing to change for her instead of the other way around that we generally see.

Overall though the story line was great and well written. It kept me turning the pages and staying up late. I will definitely be reading the rest of the series. I recommend this book, as long as you go in with eyes wide open as to what a healthy relationship looks like.

I'm giving it 3.5 stars, but rounding up on Goodreads and Amazon.

Creatura The Creatura Series Book 1 eBook Nely Cab Reviews

What is it with three-thousand-year-old gods and teenage high school girls? And what is their connection to amateur authors who write their female characters as flippant creatures who fall for the first main male character for no other reason than the male is reasonably attractive and causes delicious tingles to run down her spine?

That's what this book is about. Without the handsome alpha-male character, our protagonist, Isis, is basically...basic. If David isn't dragging her to tea parties with his mother and brothers (who all decided to come to earth to meet this fascinating new human girl), Isis isn't doing much of anything besides thinking of David and falling desperately in love with him after only 2 months. It was incredibly unrealistic how quickly Isis accepted David was a god and not some crazy person who kidnapped her from her school. Wouldn't most people be kicking and screaming if someone dragged you to their car and drove away? Not Isis....

Oh, David is incredibly jealous of any male who so much as says "Hello" to Isis. The author makes him sound like a control freak who enjoys making Isis feel uncomfortable by pushing her up against walls and cars and generally invading her space. If Isis disagrees with him, David calls her childish.

To make things even better, Gabriel, Isis’s ex-boyfriend, comes back to town and wants Isis back! Hooray, another boy toy!

Oh, and now for my favorite part of incredibly scathing reviews! Excerpts from the book! Be warned, some of these may be spoilers

“Some would call it corny…too corny, even. But I was a lost cause for corny.” This whole book is a lost cause for corny.

“I haven’t stopped thinking about that day in the hallway. Your lips tasted like sweet ripened berries. If I never taste them again, I’ll starve.” Author, why you write stupid sentences?!

“Don’t look at me. That’s your problem.” Said by Claire, Isis’s mother who is so incredibly worried because her daughter suffers from insomnia, but doesn’t lift a finger to help when her daughter’s ex-boyfriend won’t leave Isis alone despite repeatedly telling him to leave. Get your priorities straight, Ma!

“All of a sudden…” is used rather excessively. Suddenly, this book feels entirely too repetitive.

David is so shocked by Isis’s “betrayal” (meaning, she was forcibly kissed by her ex, and David somehow saw that as her willing kissing him. I mean, come one, you’re 3,000 years old and you can’t decipher basic human body language?) that he rips the life from his body, gives it to his mother, and then boards a plane and flies to France to meet with Eros, some love doctor god guy, because he wants help making Isis love him. Again, what is it with high school girls that gods just can’t get enough of?

“Suddenly, his mouth reacted to the touch of my tongue and he drank me in with passion.” LOLOLOLOLOL is she a soda, or what?

“I guess I’m being selfish again, aren’t I? I forget that you’re so new and inexperienced.” Says David, to his 17 year old girlfriend, while he’s just being all godly over here and becoming infatuated with high schoolers, but no big deal.

Seriously, nothing happens in this book. Isis goes to school, makes out with David, ignores calls from Gabriel and laments about how she still cares for him, then showers, then goes back to school, and maybe has a tea party with David’s family. Without David in it, there is no story. Not a lick. Isis doesn’t drive the plot, she’s a leaf in the wind.

Oh, and the ending is stupid.
As I didn’t really read the blurb before I started reading it, (although I probably did when I first heard of the book but have forgotten what it says) I have no idea what I was getting into when I finally decided to read it. But I think that was a good thing because the book hooked me in after the first paragraph.

The story has a touch of originality into it although the Gabriel bit of the conflict was a bit predictable for me. I like all of the characters. They were fun to read and also endearing. I was amused the most with the twins but among all the characters, it was David I love most. I think I enjoyed reading about his characters the most because of his old fashion virtues that I grew up with. To be honest, this is the first book in my indie reading experience where courtship was mentioned. I know times have changed and even in my country, it’s not done exactly the way David did it but I like how he went through those stages of the relationship with Isis. I love not just the actions he did for Isis but also the fact that he’s not in a rush.

For someone who loves Greek mythology, I love small portion of reference into it. Although there are a lot of questions left hanging and the story even ended up in a cliffhanger, I enjoyed the story very much. I’m sure you can tell that I’ll be reading the next one.
