“It is a joy to savor Tatlock’s stories.”— Publisher’s Weekly

New Yorker Neil Sadler returns to his hometown of Mason, Ohio, where the small-town was rocked by the suspicious death of Helen Syfert, the mother of Neil’s friend, Mary. As the pair reconnects, Neil learns their once-close relationship hasn't survived the tragedy of Mary’s loss. In time, though, the couple finds that what pushed them apart years ago now seems to be pulling them together. Still, Neil finds himself struggling to recover from a more recent loss, one he keeps tucked in his heart. While the mystery of Helen’s death remains unsolved, finding closure will require opening old wounds, mending broken relationships, and facing new fears.

Things We Once Held Dear edition by Ann Tatlock Religion Spirituality eBooks

I've read a number of Ms. Tatlock's books, but this was not my favorite! There were a lot of characters, related and unrelated, I couldn't keep track of.
There are two voices, Neil, the old flame, and Mary, a woman whose mother was killed and whose father was convicted of that murder.
What was difficult for me was at just about every chapter you didn't know what time frame things were being discussed. It wasn't until about halfway through the book that I figured out the murder was a long time ago, many many years ago. Every chapter started off with something that was happening, or a conversation that was going on, but without putting a date at the beginning of the chapter you don't know when it was. Sometimes it was when they were teenagers, sometimes it was when they were adults, or children, sometimes it was recent or right now, but it wasn't readily understandable when that chapter took place.
I don't know, it was just confusing. I was never really sympathetic towards any of the characters but the old uncle, who is waiting for God to take him home, and Mary's father, because he was going to be convicted of something he didn't do. None of the characters other than those two seem to be all that likable.
Yeah, this is one Ann Tatlock book I will not read again, nor recommend.

The writing style of this book was not my style. Not saying it was a bad book, but it was hard for me to follow, many characters, relations and times to keep track of. You had no idea with each chapter if they were discussing the past or present.

The overall story was sad, depressing and somewhat philosophical. The ending was ok, but not how I wanted it to end.
I'm an Ann Tatlock fan - no apologies. And "Things We Once Held Dear" only made that fan status stronger!

The only thing I'd question is the genre of historical fiction. I'm not sure how this story fits that. Otherwise, the wonderful way the story is told, the characters are developed, and the dramatic tension is brought to a proper end are everything I've come to expect from Ann Tatlock. Only each book is very different, so I never know how it will turn out. That is good writing, fellow readers!
Have discovered Ann Tatlock and am grabbing up every book I see because I do like the blending of life lessons, history and always a love story. Neil Sadler and his family have interesting story and Mary and her family history.
This is a story full of mystery, real life and finding yourself.
This author has a smooth writing style. Her stories tend to flow so nicely. The characters are realistic and have flaws like the rest of us. The mystery kept me guessing up until it was revealed as to who killed Mary's mother. This is unusual, as I tend to figure things out long before the end of the book. I love a story that holds my interest and works my brain trying to solve the mystery. Things We Once Held Dear did just that.

I truly enjoyed this novel and look forward to reading more by Ann Tatlock. I give this book 4 1/2 stars.

it was amazing
Read from November 18 to 26, 2016

This novel painted a very intense look at grief, nostalgia, and many layers of accompanying emotions.
I loved the small town setting in my home state of Ohio. It brought back many fond memories of a simpler life contrasted with urban influence. Going home again provided healing closure for Neil. Highly recommended!
After suddenly losing his young wife, Neil returns to his hometown--and all of the pain, broken relationships, and secrets from which he'd fled.

I like this book especially because the characters are realistic and multi-dimensional. Situations and events, too, are believable. As in real life, nothing is clear-cut, black and white, but all shades of gray.

The ending is not the one I'd predicted early in the book. I don't want to spoil the story for you, so I'll stop there, but the surprise is a good thing!

Things We Once Held Dear is a complex story with some themes that wouldn't be appropriate for children, but it's written in a clean style--no graphic violence, profanity, or sexual content. I appreciate that!

Overall--as you can tell by the stars above, I'd recommend this book!
Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love Ann Tatlock's books. All of them. They each seem to have a serious storyline, sometimes a bit dark and depressing. But realistic and life affirming. I love her storylines. But this one was really hard for me to read. I felt so sad from the very beginning. The sadness didn't lift. It was hard to even finish. I did, and I was glad it was finished, and of course it had a happy ending. If you're looking for a feel-good story, it's hard to find that in this book.
