If you enjoy historical fiction with a twist or are a fan of Sarah Waters then you should really try Silver by Scott Cairns. Think Tipping the Velvet crossed with Crimson Petal and the White and you will instantly draw on the sensual evocation of Victorian London where secrets and lies make startling bedfellows.
London, 1911 - The death of Avery Silver, an unremarkable, elderly gentleman should not cause a stir but when his daughter , Imogen, identifies his body a shocking secret is brought to light that not only disrupts her life but also makes her question her own identity.
Inspire by a true story, Silver is the story of one man's struggle to come to terms with being born in the wrong body. It is the story of how his daughter, a woman who, when faced with the question of her own heritage, finds some extraordinary answers. It is a novel about identity and love, exploring themes of gender, position, class and sexuality.
A recent semi-finalist in the Breakthrough Novel Awards 2013, Publishers Weekly had this to say about 'Silver' (manuscript)
This impressive historical novel tracks the parallel stories of a transsexual in 19th-century London and his grown daughter, who only discovers his secret upon his death. When Imogen Bancroft’s father dies, her mourning is quickly overshadowed by a scandal regarding Avery (née Alice) Silver’s gender. This unfolding of events lines up with Avery’s own transition (nonsurgical) from female to male. As a young woman, Alice feels uncomfortable in her own skin -- but as she comes of age, the reality of her gender becomes unbearable. Her father is a wealthy widower and both his money and inattention allow her to explore passing for male, from wearing custom suits to the courtship of a rebellious young woman. Masterfully structured, this is a journey of self-discovery for both Avery and his daughter Imogen, whose personal history, parental relationships, and marriage all come into question after the truth is revealed. Every character is fully realized -- each with his own motivations, desires and flaws -- and the author never resorts to preaching, in spite of the politically charged topic

Silver edition by Scott Cairns Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I absolutely loved this book. The story was gripping, the writing was charming and brilliant and I found it very difficult to put it down. I wanted to meet Avery Silver, he is intriguing, confident and so easy to like. Imogen clearly loved her Father regardless of who she thought he was and that's a credit to him and his dedication to her throughout his life. I can't wait for the sequel, please hurry up Scott Cairns and I encourage everyone to read this book.
This is a book set in 2 times (the 1870s and around 1910), told from 2 main points of view and the jumps between them can be a little confusing - especially Avery, but the less said about that the better or I'll give too much away.
I'm no historian, but it feels reasonably accurate and the tone of the novel reflects the period. It almost sounds like a Conan Doyle/Holmes story in places.
If you want a love story with twists, and are prepared to challenge your own stereotypes and the way you think, then this one will make you think as well as being a well told story.

Poet Cairns brings dignity and sensitivity to this tale of living into one's truth. Only someone of genuine loving kindness would craft such a tale.
A big thumbs up for this writer. Not only was it a difficult subject matter, but is/was a need to clarify what it was like for the community during that era on how to deal with such a delicate subject. Avery Silver was a brave man, and to live honestly in his skin during that era was a difficult, yet necessary task. The characters were well developed, and the author did a great job of using the technique of switching between characters and time difference was done without any hiccups. The author dealt with the topic of being transgendered easy for the reader to understand, and comprehend if you didn't know before reading this book, and that was a key element to start from. I give this author a high five for bringing a novel in this subject matter to the public's awareness. Thank you very much. Well worth buying and reading. It stay in my library, and I'll share it' review to whomever needs a good read.
